MG has released teasers of its latest electric SUV, the MGS5 EV, which is set to replace the ZS EV in European markets. In October, the company launched the Chinese version of this model, dubbed the ES5, in its home market. Now, the new electric SUV is preparing for its European debut with a fresh design and an upgraded platform.

The MGS5 EV will be built on the modular scalable platform (MSP), the same architecture that underpins the MG4 hatchback. This platform has proven to be quite successful, particularly in countries like the UK, where the MG4’s affordability and performance have helped it gain popularity among EV buyers. The SUV is equipped with five-spoke retro-style alloy wheels, which complement its bold stance. Unlike some of the latest models that come with flush door handles, MG has opted for conventional pull-type handles for the MGS5 EV. This choice might indicate a focus on cost efficiency or a preference for user-friendly ergonomics over trendy design elements.

MG has not yet disclosed specific details regarding the powertrain of the MGS5 EV. However, looking at the MG4’s specifications, some insights can be drawn. The MG4 comes with a single motor producing 166 BHP, powering the front wheels. The China-spec ES5 carries the same powertrain. In Europe, the MG4 is available in multiple configurations, including a variant with a more powerful 198 BHP motor and a dual-motor all-wheel-drive XPower version, which delivers an impressive 423 BHP.

One of the areas where the MG4 faced criticism was its interior quality and infotainment system, especially when compared to European and Korean competitors. MG acknowledges this feedback and claims that the new MGS5 EV will offer a more premium cabin experience while maintaining an affordable price point.
