Bezos-Backed EV Startup Unveils Shape-Shifting Car

A stealth startup in Michigan with Jeff Bezos investment is shaking things up in the marketing world by using an eccentric and unmatched approach in the electric car industry. Founded in 2022, Slate Auto has showcased a prototype of its electric vehicle in California to get the attention from car fans as well as industry insiders. The company is preparing for the launch event on April 24 at Long Beach and it has already created a lot of buzz.
What makes Slate’s EV so special? It is considered to be a vehicle with the ability to change its form – nearly a “Transformer” in real life. The startup disclosed several of its electric truck designs in California and is referring to them as “disguises.” It’s more than just gimmick; its part of Slate Auto’s plan to market the EV’s customizability and versatility before the reveal.
Numerous prototype variations of the vehicle have been observed all over the place, disguised as different models or types of vehicles. One featured a two-door SUV with decaling for a Rockabye Rides. Another one looked like it was a hatchback, similar to Rivian’s upcoming R3. They aren’t separate vehicles, though; rather, different transformations of the same model.
The internal name for that base model design is “Blank Slate.” It is said to be the model all south buyers will be able to customize to their needs and preferences. As someone stated who is familiar with the company’s internal plans and trademark filings, their objectives includes turning the vehicle’s shape and function to the owner’s needs. Currently, the ev is projected to be priced at roughly $25,000. The company’s contract succintly describes want it the vehicle’s mission will be: “We Built It. You Make It.””
Slate has been operating under the radar until now. Techcrunch published a report detailing the company’s strategy and unveiling a significant investment from Bezos. The startup has secured upward of $100 million in funding, alongside other big names like Mark Walter, the Los Angeles Dodgers owner and Guggenheim Partners CEO, who joined the round and the board in the Series B.
Reportedly, the company focused their pitches towards investors around the term “Transformer.” Another story that Slate’s team provided showed how the investors were displayed a standard prototype but during a quick intermission to another room, the investors were shown a completely different vehicle. When the investors returned, they were presented with a vehicle that had undergone complete modifications while a team member rapidly customized the vehicle in their absence. That’s how Slate closed the capital deal and moved forward with development.
One of the few people to come across a camouflage EV disguise was an automotive journalist for The Autopian, David Tracy. He described the model in question as having the appearance of an SUV with a small pick-up truck at the front and a cover where the truck bed is. It has fake logos and it’s concerning a questionable URL which very obviously indicates it is part of an elaborate campaign that started before the unveiling.
Tracy went on to say how unlike any other vehicle he has encountered in his life ever, Slate’s EV is one of a kind. While he has stated how he is under strict NDA which barrs him from showing any technical info, it is felt from the initial surface evaluation of the information that is exposed that Slate is doing something revolutionary.
That remains classified, as is the performance specs of the vehicle. Changes to the design of the EV tend to garner attention, yet Slate’s focus on customization and design suggests that the developers aim for distinction among competitors in the industry of electric cars. No statements have been released regarding the tech features such as motor specifications, battery range and other crucial elements of the vehicle.
Even with the utmost confidentiality, Slate has sent out early invitations before the launch event and has already given some automotive journalists a preview of the Slate automobile. If these previews are accurate, it seems Slate has plans to release a disruptive vehicle in the EV sector, prioritizing customization, and affordability, while also adding a bit of showmanship.
With only a few days remaining until the official disclosure, market analysts are keenly waiting to see what other surprises alongside the previously shown EV style features are revealed by Slate Auto. Based on the industry’s gunning marketing strategies, this stands to be one of the most distinct EVs to launch in recent years.
