Nikola’s Arizona Plant Gains Interest Amid Tariff Uncertainty

Nikola Corp., the bankrupt electric vehicle manufacturer, has secured court approval to auction its Arizona manufacturing facility. This development has drawn attention from industry players, as the 691,000-square-foot plant in Coolidge could prove particularly valuable for automakers seeking to move production to the U.S. amid ongoing uncertainties regarding tariffs.
According to Benjamin Butterfield, a lawyer representing Nikola’s unsecured creditors, the facility is a fully operational, “turn-key” asset that could attract buyers looking to establish or expand their manufacturing presence in the country. The auction is set to take place in April, with the sale process including not just the plant but also Nikola’s EV and hydrogen-electric technology.
The auction comes at a time when the Trump administration has been sending mixed signals regarding tariffs on imported vehicles and components. Over the past week, the administration has made a series of announcements and reversals regarding potential import duties, creating uncertainty for the automotive industry. Major automakers, including Ford, General Motors, and Stellantis, have reportedly urged the White House to provide exemptions or additional time to adjust their supply chains.
Butterfield emphasized the potential value of Nikola’s facility to any company seeking to move its operations to the U.S., given the current policy environment. In addition to the plant itself, the sale includes Nikola’s hydrogen-electric vehicle technology, which could be a major advantage for a buyer looking to enter or expand in the clean-energy transportation sector.
Judge Thomas Horan, overseeing Nikola’s bankruptcy proceedings, approved the sale process, which includes an April 3 deadline for initial bids. If multiple offers are received, an auction will be held on April 7 to determine the final buyer.
Nikola’s legal representatives indicated that there has been significant interest in the assets. Attorney Joshua Morse noted that potential buyers have been visiting both the Coolidge facility and the company’s headquarters in Phoenix as part of their due diligence. He added that interested parties have been signing non-disclosure agreements rapidly, and some have already engaged with Nikola’s management regarding the acquisition.
The manufacturing facility itself has a complex financial history. In 2023, Nikola sold the land on which the Coolidge plant is built for $50.4 million and then leased it back. At that time, the facility was appraised at $174 million. Now, with the company undergoing bankruptcy proceedings, the fate of the plant and its assets depends on the outcome of the upcoming auction.
Nikola filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection in February, citing approximately $98 million in outstanding debt. The auction of its facility and technology is part of the broader effort to liquidate assets and pay back creditors.
The outcome of this sale could have broader implications for the EV industry and the U.S. automotive sector, particularly at a time when the government’s stance on tariffs remains unpredictable.
